East Hanover at a Glance
The Township of East Hanover is the "Gateway to Morris County." Traveling west from Essex County, the roads lead to this suburban community which has an effective mix of residential beauty, fine industry and successful commercial enterprises. Commerce and industry make it possible for its residents to enjoy a low tax rate. In fact, the East Hanover property tax rate ranks among the lowest in Morris County- - $2.15 per $100 of assessed property valuation for the year 1998.
Incorporated in 1928, the Township of East Hanover covers an area of 8.2 square miles. It is 25 miles west of New York City and 15 miles west of the City of Newark. The Passaic River is on its Eastern border and the Whippany River is on its Western side. Parsippany, Troy Hills, Florham Park, Hanover Township (Whippany), Roseland, Livingston and Montville are the municipalities adjacent to East Hanover. Routes 10 and 280 are major arteries which pass through East Hanover with Eagle Rock Avenue feeding from Roseland and Columbia Turnpike close by in Florham Park.
The population of East Hanover is a little more than 10,100 people living in about 3,100 single-family homes. The public school system is excellent with two elementary schools and a middle school operated by the East Hanover Board of Education. In addition, there is a parochial school, St. Rose of Lima Academy. East Hanover graduates usually move on to Hanover Park Regional High School, which is a highly respected high school operated by the Hanover Park Regional Board of Education.
Largely developed, East Hanover is proud of such major corporations as Novartis and Nabisco in addition to more than 2100 other business enterprises operating in industrial parks, contemporary office complexes and retail stores. Route 10 is becoming one of the finest shopping areas in New Jersey. East Hanover is also known by many as the final resting place of their loved ones. Gate of Heaven and Restland Memorial Park are among its many cemeteries.
Mount Pleasant Avenue contains a historical district, which has been placed in the Congressional Record. The First Presbyterian Church and its adjoining graveyard date back to the Revolutionary War. Many American Indian artifacts have been discovered in various parts of East Hanover.
Presently the government of the Township of East Hanover is the small municipality Mayor and Council Form. The Mayor and four Councilmembers are directly elected by the voters. The mayor is Chief Executive Officer of the Township and participates and presides over the meetings of the council. The operations of the Township are coordinated by the Township Clerk and managed by various department heads.
