Location
The Township of East Hanover, New Jersey is a suburb of New York City and Philadelphia. The township encompasses an area of 8.2 square miles and is bordered on the east by the Passaic River and the municipalities of Livingston, Roseland, and West Caldwell. East Hanovers eastern (northeastern) border includes the adjacent townships of Montville, Parsippany-Troy Hills, and Hanover. On the south, East Hanover is bounded by the borough of Florham Park.
Major East Hanover Roadways
Two main roads in East Hanover Township are Ridgedale Avenue and Route 10.
Ridgedale Avenue is home to most of East Hanovers public buildings, including Town Hall, the public library, the Central and Middle Schools, the Police and Fire Departments, and the Post Office. It is also the home of great commerce and serves as a main north-south route of travel in East Hanover.
Route 10 intersects both Ridgedale Avenue and River Road within East Hanover. Route 10 runs for two miles through the township of East Hanover, along which border a tremendous amount of commercial and industrial establishments. Route 10 is the home to a movie complex, bowling alley, restaurants, and a great number of stores. It is also the location (as well as Ridgedale Avenue) of the Novartis Pharmaceutical Complex.
Other important roads in East Hanover include River Road, DeForest Avenue, Eagle Rock
Avenue, Troy Road, and Hanover Road.
River Road serves as the towns second major north-south route. The Nabisco
Foods Corporation is located on this road.
DeForest Avenue connects Ridgedale Avenue and River Road. The local post office, as well
as one side of Nabisco, is located on DeForest Avenue.
Eagle Rock Avenue is a heavily traveled east-west route connecting River Road and Ridgedale
Avenue with the communities of Roseland and West Orange in Essex County. This road is home
to various industries, the Hanover Manor, and the town pool.
Mildly traveled Troy Road is the
main street of a major residential area in western East Hanover.
Hanover Road is home to various industries and residencies and serves as an important
means of transportation to the community of Florham Park.
Major Neighboring Highways
Because of its prime location in northeastern New Jersey, East Hanover is easily accessible by a great number of roads and highways. The highway system allows easy travel between East Hanover and many places both in New Jersey and out of state.
State Highway Route 10 serves as an artery west through Morris
County and east into Essex County.
Interstate Route 280, a route that forks into Route 80, also passes through the northern part
of East Hanover. This highway extends eastward to Newark. By use of this highway, one can
cover the 15 mile distance to Newark in less than 20 minutes.
Route 80 itself passes about 2 miles north of the township. Route 80 runs eastward into Passaic and Bergen counties and eventually, the George Washington Bridge. By use of Route 80, the 15 or so miles to Paterson, New Jersey can be covered in less than half an hour. Travel time into New York City (The Bronx) can be as low as under an hour. Route 80 heads straight westward though Pennsylvania and Ohio, past the Chicago area, and eventually into California.
Passing about 8 miles to the south of East Hanover is Interstate Route 78. This highway also runs eastward into Newark and by use of an extension of the New Jersey Turnpike, Jersey City (a distance of about 20 miles from East Hanover) can be reached in about 45 minutes. Route 78 west travels into Pennsylvania and serves as a direct artery to the cities of Allentown and Harrisburg.
Less than 4 miles west of East Hanover lies Interstate Route 287. This North-South route extends southward through Somerville into Perth Amboy and north into Suffern in New York State. Route 287 North can used as an efficient means of reaching the New York State Thruway or as a means of using route 287/87 to reach the Tappan Zee Bridge. The New York State Thruways heads straight north through New York State and eventually into Albany. The Tappan Zee Bridge can be used to reach Tarrytown, NY, and also Connecticut and the New England states. Routes 280, 80, and 78 can all be used to reach New Jerseys main north/south arteries--the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate Route 95).
The Garden State Parkway passes about 9 miles to the east of East Hanover and serves as North Jerseys main route to the Jersey Shore. The Parkway South serves as a direct path to Jerseys oceanfront communities, including Asbury Park, Atlantic City, and Cape May. It can also be taken north to Bergen County and New York State.
The New Jersey Turnpike (also known as Interstate Route 95 as it continues into other states) passes about 14 miles to the east of East Hanover. This highway travels from northeastern New Jersey to the southwestern portion of the state. The Turnpike South can be used to reach the Brunswicks, Trenton, and the Philadelphia-Camden area. A trip to Philadelphia can often be made in less than two hours. 95 South eventually leads through Delaware, Maryland, the Carolinas, and eventually Florida. 95 north continues through New York City and through New England. Extensions of the New Jersey Turnpike can also be used to reach Bayonne, Jersey City, and the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels.
